Rome Itinerary Part 1

December. The first month of the year you can really start to feel festive, and there’s a definite chill in the air. So, what better time of year to escape to a city of unrivalled history and incredible beauty. Of course, there’s wonderful food and wine to boot.

Arriving in Rome, we soon noticed how there are sights to enjoy on every street corner, passing the magnificent Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore on the way to our hotel, this was only the beginning of Rome’s incredible discoveries.

We stayed at the excellent Monti Palace Hotel, which is 5 mins walk from the Colosseum, and is surrounded by excellent restaurants, bars and shops. The perfect base for our long weekend. The rooms are modern and elegant and there is a breakfast buffet included in the room rate, which is varied and delicious.

The bathroom in our room was goals.

Our first outing was of course, the Colosseum. It was simply incredible. Turning the corner and seeing it standing proud in front of you is a wonderful experience.

Once inside, we decided to opt for the audio tour to learn a bit more about the history of the place, no headphones are required so you only need one between two of you, but it does really help to immerse you in a sense of what it was like all those years ago.

Next we enjoyed a spot of lunch at a lovely place called Ristorante Massenzio Ai Fori, a mere stone’s throw from the Colosseum. Dining al fresco in December is a rather wonderful experience in itself, and the restaurant had a pretty seating area at the front addorned with fairy lights and greenery. We ordered two beers (it was past midday after all) and shared Spaghetti Carbonara and a Proscuitto e Fungi Pizza, both delicious.

After lunch, we headed back to the Roman Forum, a must see if you visit Rome. It is a plaza surrounded by the ruins of many ancient government buildings. Vast columns stand proud amoungst the foundations of what must’ve been monumental structures.

Be sure also to walk up Palatine Hill for stunning views of the Colosseum and Forum below.

We returned to our hotels buzzing with the excitement of the day. One thing was for sure, this was only day one of what was sure to be a fantastic trip.
